Network Upgrade Solution for a Hospital in Shenzhen

With the development of internet informatization, an increasing number of hospitals are opting for network upgrades to transition into the modern network era. Upgrading hospital networks can facilitate better management and circulation of medical information, enhance the intelligence and collaborative work of medical equipment, and provide convenient storage, transmission, and access to electronic medical records, patient information, and medical reports, thereby improving the reliability and availability of medical information.

Client Background

 

The client, a hospital in Shenzhen, is facing the need for a network upgrade due to recent expansion. The existing network infrastructure is no longer adequate to meet the growing demands, leading the client to select Infdevice Communications for the upgrade project.

Analysis of Existing Network

Infdevice Communications engineers have identified several issues with the current network setup:

Single Point of Failure

The terminal services, both external and internal, converge on the server aggregation switch, creating a single point of failure that could lead to a network collapse if the device fails.

Network Performance Bottleneck

The link between the server aggregation switch and the main core switch is a bottleneck for network performance, affecting the overall quality and bandwidth.

Structural Disarray

 

The lack of connection with the server aggregation switch means it cannot serve as a backup, and a failure in the main core would result in a network collapse without redundancy.

Network Upgrade

Phase One

 
  • Deployment of a new core as the aggregation switch for the new building to ensure access switches operate normally.
  • Interconnection of the new core with the old core via dual-link aggregation for Layer 2 communication to bridge the new and existing networks, preparing for server migration.
  • Interconnection of the newly constructed server area with the existing server area to ensure smooth network access during server migration.

Phase Two

 
  • Moving the old core's gateway to the new core and creating gateway addresses for various segments on the new core for business migration.
  • Deletion of the old core's gateway to avoid IP address conflicts, while retaining VLAN information.
  • The old core serves as the aggregation switch for the old building, only passing VLAN traffic without routing.

During Phase Two, a solution for the issue of one VLAN having two gateways in the existing server network is proposed:

 

  • Method 1: Modify the gateway address of servers or data to unify it as a single address.
  • Method 2: Configure VLAN interfaces on switches with primary and secondary IPs for servers.

Infdevice Communications engineers decided to initially adopt the primary and secondary IPs method to ensure business continuity before unifying server and data gateways.
